Jael Mendoza
Baravere Studio is excited to collaborate with Philippines based artist Jael Mendoza as our resident artist, whose work will be found exclusively in Baravere Studio’s original silk scarf collection.
Jael is a graphic arts illustrator and a fine artist of surrealist artwork using digital and traditional mediums and processes. Her signature style draws from human emotions while making connections with the supernatural state of mind. Her work celebrates hope against the backdrop of modern travails. Her use of vivid colours and imaginative elements sets her apart as a unique artist with a surreal edge.
Wander Closer.
How far is too far?
There is never any doubt that we are never too far from grace. At the back of our heads, we know that our heavenly father will always welcome us back no matter how far our prodigal selves have wandered off. We tell ourselves He will never let us drown too deep or waiver too late. And that is why we sometimes take another reckless step farther, we plunge in a little deeper, never counting the sense of emptiness and loss of our persistent wandering. But the wandering has no blessing; the doubt has no reward. Then, step by step, we drag ourselves back to His side. We regret, we realize, we repent, we resolve. There is no love outside Jesus. There is no greener pasture other than His side of the fence. There are no still waters other than those adjacent His shore. If we do wander, wander off closer to Him.
Anywhere else is nowhere.

Chara (2020)
"In this piece, I drew my inspiration from the comforts brought by Psalms 139. The first few months of pandemic did the worst of me: I found it difficult to put myself to sleep and I battled anxious thoughts that left me exhausted. I was reminded that the Lord knew every inch of my being and even darkness will not be dark for it is as light to Him. I named this artwork, Chara, which means Joy in Greek. For in this time of crisis, we should all rejoice for our hope is sure in Christ. My warm choices of colour palette, stylised realism characters, and pop-surrealism inspired style serve as my ode to the joy and hope that is found in these trying times."

City (2021)
"A few months ago, I started reading Pilgrim's Progress and watched its animated movie adaptation. This artwork is inspired by its theme, a pilgrim's daily journey towards the promised city. I resonated with the book’s main protagonist, Christian Pilgrim, as he faced numerous obstacles towards his goal. I battled recurring sorrows resulted by my own impatience, and many times I wanted to have a control of how my world should be; but all of these life’s boulders were outdone by the intense longing of the return of my Saviour. Many of my inner idols were crushed, and through the scriptures I was given assurance of the hope that only Christ could give. In this artwork, my objective is to achieve a story-like, illustrative look by combining historical and futuristic fantasy. I played with different colour palettes in different settings: the evil city, the chasm, and the holy city that is being traveled upon by the pilgrims. Creating these settings was like merging different voices together, just like a choir."

Song for the Unsung
I made these pieces to serve as a tribute for the frontliners: medical or non-medical. Hard times are sure, you are placed in an unusual battlefield where you wield another kind of weapon to defeat the unseen enemy. This quote from J.C. Ryle is also my hope for each one of you--"Leave nothing unsettled that is eternal. Run no risk when your soul is at stake." Look for a Saviour, look at Christ.

Restoration
To those deep lines caused by our sinful nature that led to our brokenness—take this in mind, that there is a mighty Healer who makes all things new and beautiful. No matter how great the scar is, we are never beyond repair. 2 Cor 5:17

Gnascor
One of the meanings of the Latin word Gnascor is “spring forth.” This piece is to celebrate the power of the Maker in the season of undoing--the inevitable transformation for the chosen ones. We become witnesses of that power, and by the working of the Comforter, we are enabled for His glory. The more we walk further on this surface of the earth, the more we dread in worthlessness; and as we undergo the metamorphosis, we draw closer to heart of the great I AM, and be in the likeness of His Son.
Once was blind and now, we see.

Graseapients
The waves speak the undoing, the rebuilding of one’s character, and lessons of humility.
Reality in the middle of our life’s ocean is harsh, but there is grace in the vastness as we look forward for the promise of life before us.

An Ode To Arts and Music
The coexistence of my love for both disciplines which grows over the course of time. I am always curious on how I could incorporate my drawing into the bars and to make my idea of merging illustration and music alive. So, I flipped the music sheet, and drew hawthorns and pearls on a silhouette of a bar as if the elements are growing on it. I posted this piece during Inktober 2018.

Days seem slower as I wait for what
seems to be uncertain;
Yet what is sure is already holding me
captive and taken
